The Woodpecker / DTE Broken File Removal Tips, jointly developed with Dr. Yoshi Terauchi, are designed for precision and efficiency in retrieving separated instruments from root canals. The tips are crafted with extreme thinness (0.1mm) and specific shapes to facilitate dentin removal and safe retrieval of broken files, ensuring minimal stress on the canal walls.

E87/ED87 Tip
Shape: Extremely thin, conical tip with a 0.1mm head diameter and 0.01 taper.
Primary Use: Extending the grooved space to a 180-degree semicircular space and facilitating the removal of the broken file.

Features:
Extends the grooved space until the broken file begins to "dance" (move laterally under magnification).
Facilitates ultrasonic removal of the broken file.
Creates a thin space for introducing hand gutta-percha removal instruments.
Special Functionality: The tip can be pre-curved based on the degree of root canal curvature for better access.

E88/ED88 Tip (Katana-V)
Shape: Extremely thin, sword-shaped tip, front and back directed.
Primary Use: Creating a 90-degree semicircular grooved space between the inner wall and the broken file.

Features:
Designed to cut dentin precisely with its flat surface directed toward the broken file.
Creates a thin and controlled grooved space while minimizing dentin removal.
Optimized for canals with moderate curvature.
Special Functionality: Can be pre-curved to match the canal curvature.

E89/ED89 Tip (Katana-H)
Shape: Extremely thin, sword-shaped tip, left and right directed.
Primary Use: Creating a 90-degree semicircular grooved space between the inner wall and the broken file.

Features:
Works effectively in tight spaces and highly curved canals.
Cuts dentin precisely with its flat surface directed toward the broken file.
Complements ED88 in creating the necessary space for broken file retrieval.
Special Functionality: Can be pre-curved to adapt to root canal curvature.

How To Use the Broken File Removal Tips

Step 1: Canal Enlargement and Flaring
For canals with a curvature less than 15 degrees: Use a No. 3 Gates Glidden bur to enlarge and flare the canal by brushing against the outer wall.
For canals with a curvature greater than 15 degrees: Use a No. 60/.02 taper NiTi file for the same purpose.

Step 2: Creating a 90-Degree Semicircular Space
Use ED88 (Katana-H) and ED89 (Katana-V) to create a thin space between the inner wall and the broken file.
Direct the flat surface of the tip toward the broken file and activate ultrasonics in short bursts (half a second).
For canals with a curvature greater than 30 degrees, use medical-grade silicone oil for lubrication.

Depth Guidelines:
At least one-third of the broken file length for mild curvature.
At least half the broken file length for severe curvature.
Note: Use low power settings and increase only when cutting dentin is not effective.

Step 3: Extending the 90-Degree Space to 180 Degrees
Use ED87 (TFRK-S) to extend the semicircular space to 180 degrees until the broken file begins to "dance."
Operate the tip in a pecking and pulsing motion to prevent secondary fractures or tip breakage.
Note: Avoid pressing the tip sideways against the canal wall to minimize cyclic fatigue.

Step 4: Ultrasonic Removal of the Broken File
Fill the canal with 17% EDTA for curvatures up to 30 degrees, or with vegetable oil for curvatures exceeding 30 degrees.
Activate ultrasonics in short vertical strokes within the prepared space until the broken file is dislodged and removed.

Key Features of Dr. Terauchi’s Tips

High Precision: Extremely thin tips (0.1mm) for controlled dentin removal.
Pre-Curved Design: Adaptable for canals with varying curvatures.
Optimized Safety: Reduces risk of secondary fractures and preserves dentin integrity.
Clinical Efficiency: Designed for step-by-step retrieval of broken files, ensuring smooth and successful removal under magnification.
